Juan Pina-Ortiz, 19, has been charged with murder, assault and battery on a law enforcement officer, and domestic assault and battery, in connection with the Sunday, Oct. 16 incident that left Juan Pina-Recendiz dead in Woodbridge, Prince William County police said.

Police were called to a home on the 5600 block of Shannon Court in Woodbridge for a domestic dispute around 1:30 a.m., they said. Authorities initially received a call regarding the accused destroying property inside the home and possibly under the influence of drugs.

When officers arrived at the home, Pina-Ortiz was "observed unclothed and actively assaulting another individual," later determined to be his father, PWC police said.

Officers challenged Pina-Ortiz, who initially ignored commands and continued to assault his father before briefly retreating further into the home. At one point, Pina-Ortiz reemerged and left the home where he "advanced towards officers in an agitated state and grabbed the vest of a K-9 officer," PWC police said.

The officer’s K-9 was deployed and bit Pina-Ortiz, who was then subsequently detained by additional officers. Pina-Ortiz sustained minor injuries from the apprehension and was treated at an area hospital before being released to police custody. The K-9 handler was not injured.

Pina-Recendiz was pronounced dead at the scene from blunt force trauma sustained during the altercation with his son. The investigation further found the accused had also assaulted his mother, a 52-year-old woman, during the altercation. No other injuries were reported.
